CHARACTER INFO
Character Name: Haein SeoSAMPLES
Age: 22
Canon: Original Character
World Description:Haein's world is similar to that of the modern 21st century, much like the one we live in now. The existence of gods is debatable, and people either choose to believe or don't. But in Haein's world, (minor) gods and spirits do exist. Major deities have long since fled to the heavens, while the smaller deities avoid areas largely populated by human beings and stick to themselves in isolated and remote locations. They've learned to distance themselves from human affairs, and no longer have much influence over the world the way they used to in more ancient times. Instead, they squabble amongst one another, forming long-lasting grudges and spending their time guarding their own resources.
Human beings and gods very rarely come across each other, while spirits tend to be shy and don't make themselves known at all. Because of this, most humans have forgotten about the existence of gods and consider the stories to be that of fiction, though of course there are still those who believe. If there is a rare occasion of a god or spirit influencing the human world, then these strange occurrences are considered to be hoaxes by the general public, and people claiming the “impossible” are written off as deluded or deranged.
History:During a stroll through the forest that she considered to be her backyard, Haein's mother, Mijae, accidentally stumbled upon a mountain god, Hwang. They quickly fell in love, but when the mountain god's jealous brother, Geum, proved to be a danger to Mijae as he had also fallen in love with her, Hwang sent her away. Mijae gave birth to Haein in the city of Seoul, but it wasn't long before Geum found mother and son. In a rage at discovering his brother and Mijae had had a child, Geum cursed Haein to have to grant three wishes for anyone in possession of a certain talisman, then sent him away to another part of the world to grant the wishes of a monster of a human being. After this traumatizing ordeal, Mijae threw such a fit that Geum backed off for a while, but any time he got in a fight with his brother or was just feeling particularly vindictive on that day, he would come back and send Haein away. This went on for years. Haein would disappear depending on his uncle's moods and he never knew where he would end up. He quickly learned to adapt, building walls around himself for protection and self-preservation. He also became quite masterful at deliberately botching up wishes or generally being uncooperative about the wishes asked of him. But as the years went on, he found himself longing for a stable environment and to not be a tool for others to use. He tried to confront his uncle, but Geum would always run away from him. He then tried to take the talisman away to destroy it, but found that he could not touch it, and when he begged the people holding the talisman to wish for its destruction, they denied him.
It became something of a dream for him to find someone who would free him from his curse. After spending a year away from home and even starting university there because of an incredibly indecisive wish maker, Haein was returned to Korea. He transferred to a university in Seoul and it's there that he met two brothers, Hyunseok and Hyunwoo, and somehow managed to become friends with them (after a lot of persistence and hardship on Hyunseok's end). For a while, things were quiet and good. But then, Hyunseok ended up with the talisman after a particularly nasty confrontation where Geum had taunted Haein that his "friends" would have no trouble turning against him. Hyunseok, despite his incredibly stupid nature, somehow managed to find a loophole and made a wish that basically enslaved Haein to him. It destroyed their friendship and a vindictive Haein lashed out in return, targeting Hyunwoo and changing his demeanor to irreparably damage the brothers' relationship.
Hyunseok and Haein spent some time making each other miserable, Hyunseok more on accident while Haein intentionally worked to ruin the other's life. Hyunseok swore that once Haein fixed Hyunwoo, he'd be freed, but Haein was distrustful and refused to do so on the suspicion that it was all a lie. Hyunseok became increasingly more and more desperate, so when a nameless god presented himself to the boy and made a deal to fix Hyunwoo in exchange for Hyunseok's servitude, the agreement was immediate. True to his word, the unnamed god kept his end of the bargain, and Hyunseok quickly realized that the deal meant that Haein had effectively been placed right into the god's hands via Hyunseok. With Hyunwoo fixed, Haein no longer had any leverage against Hyunseok, and found himself granting disastrous wishes due to the fact that the nameless god knew to be specific with his wishes so that Haein would not be able to tamper with them. With the nameless god in control of Haein and his powers, things steadily went downhill. In order to right his wrongs, Hyunseok made up his mind to free Haein from his curse. Shocked and touched by this decision, Haein tried to stop it so that he'd still have the power of the talisman to fight against the nameless god, but there wasn't any time to come up with a plan before they were discovered.
Death:After realizing that they'd been caught scheming by the nameless god, Hyunseok hastily broke Haein free of his curse. In his anger, the nameless god moved to kill Hyunseok, but Haein dove in between them to try and save the other boy and, in the process, took the killing blow.
What are your plans for this character in-game?More than anything I would love for Haein to develop as a character and allow himself to let down his guard around other people. I'd like for him to make connections with other characters... I'd like him to just be able to tolerate others in his life!! Haein has spent so much of his life avoiding or actively pushing away friendships, so to imagine him being able to make friends with just one person would be a huge achievement.
What aspects of this game and/or its setting are you most interested in having this character engage with?I'm most interested in having the survival aspects of this game force Haein to get out of his comfort zone of being a loner and make connections in order for him to realize he can't do everything on his own like he thinks he can. He's fairly adaptable in new situations, and I'd like to explore how much of that adaptability comes into play and if there's a limit to it. There's also his rather obsessive nature when it comes to trying to find answers to mysteries, so playing around with that part of the game would be an exciting challenge as well.
How does your character generally get along with other people?Haein doesn't have the best social skills, and he makes that well-known fairly early on when meeting people. He can be argumentative, blunt, and extremely rude if he's decided he doesn't like someone. It's difficult for him to open up or trust people, having seen the worst in human beings and having been burned too many times before. Recent events have made it so that he's not as quick to go on the attack. He's become more cautious, thoughtful, and willing to hear out the other party. It's still a work in progress, but he's steadily learning how to be less of an asshole and understand that there are good people out there.
What is your character's mental state upon entering the game? He's no stranger to being tossed into unfamiliar places, so he'll manage a composed appearance. Haein won't want to address or even think about his death right away. It's not like he'll be in denial over dying, just unwilling to dwell on it at first. He'd known the risks when going up against the nameless god, and while it may haunt him in quiet moments and leave him shaken, he won't outwardly show it to anyone. If someone were to ask him about his death, he'll immediately brush the topic aside. So... his mental state is basically at "barely holding it together." It'll take him a while to come to terms with his passing.
Skills/Abilities:
- ☒ Wish Granting: Haein is at his most powerful when granting wishes. There are a number of things that he cannot grant, such as making people fall in love, killing someone, bringing back the dead, wishing for more wishes, messing with the timeline, or wishes that would harm the world/universe. The wish maker must be in possession of a talisman that summons Haein, gives them power over him, and allows for three wishes. After the three wishes are made, Haein is sent back home and the talisman returns to Geum's hands where he can then pass it off to another. Haein cannot grant wishes or use this power without the talisman. Now that he's been freed of his curse, he no longer has this ability.
- Telekinesis: The heavier it is, the more effort it takes. Haein's telekinesis requires physical and mental exertion. While he can lift and move things with it that he normally couldn't by hand, he's still limited by how much something weighs. So like... he wouldn't be able to move a mountain or a house. But he could certainly move a large pile of debris (not pick it off the ground or anything, just move), though it would exhaust him significantly.
- Enhanced Durability: He's like a punching bag, but also a person. Haein can take a good number of hits and damage and still stand on his feet. It's not at superhuman levels. He can't go flying into a building or walk through lava and be all fine.
- Healing*: As the son of a mountain god, his healing ability extends to all living creatures. But while things like plants take very little effort, larger animals and especially human beings are extremely draining for him to heal. Depending on the scale of the injury, he can go from light-headed for a couple of hours to full on passing out for days.
- Accelerated Healing*: While small cuts and bruises take a few minutes to heal (it's not instant!!), larger wounds take some time. For example, a broken arm would take about a day. He doesn't catch colds or develop illnesses. Unlike how severely it drains him to heal others, it doesn't take all that much energy to heal himself. Haein would succumb to a fatal wound since it would kill him before his body could catch up to healing him.
- Supernatural Detection: Haein can sense non-human creatures. He isn't able to pinpoint exactly what the creature is, just that they aren't human.
*NERFS: I'm more than happy to dial Haein's healing back even further, or just get rid of them entirely. I'm thinking he loses his ability to accelerate his own healing, and that healing others takes a far larger toll on him. He wouldn't be able to heal life-threatening injuries either, as he wouldn't have enough power/energy in himself to mend that kind of damage.
Flaws/Weaknesses:Oh man, Haein has flaws upon flaws upon even more flaws. While he hates people for being selfish, he is entirely hypocritical by being incredibly selfish and judgmental himself. His priority is his own self-preservation, and though recent events have proven that he is capable of looking out for others, it's still a deep-seated issue that he has yet to fully overcome. His poor social skills are worsened by the fact that he's oftentimes quite rude, and his manner of speaking is usually blunt in a way that can sour feelings. Haein's cavalier attitude regarding certain issues is also a large flaw, as he can be cruel and indifferent toward matters that would normally cause concern. He usually has zero remorse for the way he acts, and he can be both uncooperative and hostile if he feels cornered. Some of his more severe flaws are that he's suspicious of everything and everyone around him, and his cynical way of viewing the world makes him difficult to deal with. It doesn't help that he's also extremely stubborn, and he can be a bit of a control freak. Lastly, Haein is ruthlessly petty and vindictive. It's easy for him to hold grudges for ages, especially with his long-lasting temper, and he's unfortunately quite talented when it comes to taking things personally.
Besides his personality flaws, Haein is physically weak and isn't much of a fighter. He has a fear of heights, of being watched, of losing himself to madness or being corrupted (anything that would cause a lack of control on his part), and a fear of abandonment. There are currently only two people Haein would consider to be his weaknesses: his mother and Hyunseok. There's nothing in the world he wouldn't do for his mother. Meanwhile, Hyunseok has only just become someone Haein wants to protect.
Personality:To start things off, Haein absolutely despises drawing attention to himself. He shies away from public interest, preferring to keep a low profile in order to remain at a distance from the prying eyes of others. While he has always been introverted and a private person in general, his reclusive tendencies grew to be severe during his childhood. Being raised by a single mother in an affluent neighborhood put a target on his back, and the other children were eager to bully him, spurred on by the rumors their parents would spread. As he grew into his looks, people flocked to him for a different, much more shallow reason. Haein caught on at a fairly young age that the relationships he had were devoid of any real feelings and that people viewed him as a tool to use to further their own goals rather than as a friend, or even as a person. He pulled away from them, hurt by the realization that he did not have any genuine connections, and hardened his heart.
Enter all his flaws and his curse only further exacerbating his problem of making connections. It's only after coming to realize that Hyunseok was willing to give up everything for Haein that any significant change was made. Unfortunately, Haein doesn't get to live long enough for those changes to fully take effect. He does, however, realize he's capable of caring for others and that maybe, just maybe, there are people out there who are truly kind at heart. It took an awful lot of persistence and convincing on Hyunseok's part, but it's colored Haein's worldview just enough to get him started. Of course, Haein's always had a couple of good traits even without recent events. He's exceptionally and commendably loyal to those he decides are worth his time. It would take a grievous error to shatter that loyalty, and even after such an event, Haein would struggle with his former feelings. He's also rather studious, a quick-learner, and disciplined when he puts his mind to a task. Haein is goal-oriented almost to a fault, with his stubborn nature refusing to accept mistakes or failures along the way to his objective. When he is intent on doing something, he makes use of all resources he can to get there.
At the end of the day, what Haein longs for most in life is to just be an average guy. He even avoids using his abilities in an attempt to deny that he is not completely human. He's never had the chance to come around and accept what he is due to the fact that he's often too preoccupied by the circumstances he's been thrown into. While there are those out there who strive to be remarkable, Haein would be content to live out his life quietly, without the attention of both human beings or gods who bring him nothing but trouble.
