It's awfully quiet around Beacon with so much of the town down at the Helix Station. Haein is one of the few who hung back. He's also one of the few responsible for trying to repair broken lanterns - which so far hasn't been especially successful if the Librarian's last bulletin was any indication, but in Haein's defense, most of those people simply vanished without leaving a lantern for him to attempt to work on.
That changes a few days after everyone leaves. As Haein heads through the tunnels to the lab, intending to do some reading of Dr. Solis' notes, he hears a few hoots in quick succession as well as the patter of footsteps behind him. A small, chubby spirit propels itself in the tunnel behind him, hanging suspended in its center with eight very long, thin legs attached to the ceiling on which it scoots along. Dangling from its mouth is a lantern, awfully shabby but not actually broken.
When Haein turns to look, the spirit freezes, then gives a longer hoot-howl, causing it to drop the lantern as its mouth opens too wide to hold on any longer. It looks down at the floor below, back to Haein, then its entire body flips vertically so that its feet are now on the floor, properly obeying gravity, and its head points the other way - and off it scoots on its many legs, leaving the lantern where it had dropped.
